I agree with everything you said, Sea Otter, as I usually do with all of your insightful posts. Additionally, I would like to add a few points. I believe that Netscape/Qwest's big competitive advantages over GMGC/resellers here are:

1. Household names. Don't need to spend money building awareness. GMGC must build much of this awareness vis a vis the consumer from scratch.

2. Will have high-visibility right off the bat. Netcenter gets 10 million unique visitors per day and has 7 million registered users. GMGC's 52 resellers may not have quite this amount of traffic calling into their offices.

What this means to me is GMGC's reseller strategy has been weakened enormously and that it is triply important that GMGC leverage through telecom partners ASAP in order to compete with the gargantuan awareness and reach of Netcenter and the other portals (see next point). Does the prospect of NSCP/Qwest, YHOO/MCI, MSFT/Sprint vs GMGC/resellers scare the hell out of you too?

Another point is that this NSCP / Qwest offering is likely to be quickly matched by Yahoo and MSFT. Wouldn't it be great if one of these other portals chooses GMGC or, more likely, a combo of GMGC/telecom as their partner?

The final point is that NSCP's release is a pre-announcement of the service. Despite what it said in the PR, it will take a minimum of 6 months to roll this service out. That's just how long it takes to do something big in high-tech land. This gives anyone who partners with GMGC the possibility of introducing months ahead of NSCP and gaining valuable first mover advantage.

Best to all;

Drew

Qwest Communications International (QWST)33 +1/2: Goldman Sachs upgrades multimedia communications company from "market perform" to "market outperform" following plan to develop along with Netscape Communications next-generation Internet communications; believes that QWST's plan appears more favorable than rival offers on both pricing and terms; high-end pricing plan also aligns company's revenue with its costs.....
