Yes lisa, I vaguely remember something about it.. Nonetheless , I would bet that the manipulation was some kind of squeeze or something some guy tried to pull at or near expiry to make a quick profit off the guys who couldn't afford to fight him. I highly doubt it was an attempt to move the entire market...

I seem to vaguely remember such an incident as an attempt to paint the tape on an OEX expiration close. A little pressure on the stocks can have a magnified effect on the OEX options and the perpetrators have a nice profit going into the weekend.
But this is just a little background noise compared to what could be done in the 1920's or what takes a good chunk of the economic power of the Chinese government to accomplish in Hong Kong. Tommaso is right; when the public sentiment shifts, there is nothing that a conspiracy of brokerage houses or even the fabled PPT can do about it.

If you remember a more significant incident, please post the details.

lisa: I learned along time ago, you will never when this argument with most! Even after years, I still open my big mouth and state my case. I should know better by now! It is just not worth the time!
