U.S. deeply concerned over Japan trade--Eizenstat

TOKYO, Sept 18 (Reuters) - The United States is ''deeply concerned'' about Japan's rising trade surplus with it and the world, Stuart Eizenstat, U.S. undersecretary of state for economic, business and agricultural affairs, said on Friday.

''Our trade deficit with Japan is likely to hit historic highs in 1998... The rising deficit threatens (to start) a protectionist backlash,'' Eizenstat told reporters.

Washington will continue to pursue policies aimed at strong economic growth, he said.

He added that the United States would do this while keeping its markets open to goods from troubled Asian countries.

He urged Japan to import more goods from countries such as South Korea, Thailand and Indonesia.

''The burden cannot rest on our shoulders alone,'' he said, referring to the United States.

He also reiterated recent remarks by U.S. Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, saying Japan should inject ''substantial'' public funds to deal with problem loans held by the nation's banks, and address the problem of weak but solvent banks.

"The injection of public funds is essential," he said.
