Thursday September 17 3:00 PM EDT Netscape, Qwest Seen In Alliance - NYT NEW YORK (Reuters) - Web browser software company Netscape Communications Corp. (NSCP - news) and long distance carrier Qwest Communications International Inc. are expected to announce a broad alliance Monday, the New York Times reported. The alliance, to be known as Netscape Contact, will allow consumers to manage voice mail, E-Mail, and fax communications through a single site on the Web, the newspaper reported in its Monday editions. Company officials could not immediately be reached for comment on the newspaper report. Qwest CEO Joseph Naccho was quoted in the Times as saying Netscape Contact is expected to generate between $150 and $175 million in the next 18 months. As part of the deal, Qwest will pay Netscape to share in the branding on Netscape Contract, while Netscape will pay the long distance carrier for access to its network, the paper said. The alliance is part of Netscape's plan to steer away from relying on sales of its browser for the bulk of its business after Microsoft Corp. (MSFT - news), the paper said. Instead, it has decided to build up its NetCenter Web site as an information and communications service fo r consumers. Netscape can then sell advertising on the site.
