Speaking of wireless, I got a call from Clarity's marketing guy --- didn't get his exact title --- and he said their product runs at low frequencies: 5.8 GhZ unlicensed and 2.5 GhZ licensed. It's called MMDS and goes both point to point and point to multipoint and allows high bandwidth without line of sight.

I asked about competitors and he mentioned Netro (?) and Nortel's BNI.

We talked about Cisco and its strategy of buying people even if they sometimes overpaid. Then we got way off topic by discussing Alcatel's announcement with Ascend.

This morning --- before I was fully awake --- I got a call from the CFO at Bosch and I have to admit I had to think real fast to recall why someone from Bosch was calling. Besides getting all the basic information, I asked if their technology was unique in any way. He said no, not at all. He said Cisco was determined to go head-to-head with NELAS --- Nortel, Ericsson, Lucent, Alcatel, Siemens --- and needed to have access if they wanted to be in the network integrator role. They were filling a gap, he said.

I asked who the end users were and he said it wasn't customer premise nor was it central office. He then admitted he was the CFO and wasn't quite sure, and changed the subject by saying Clarity wasn't shipping product and that Cisco's model was to acquire technology within about 6 months of its having a positive EBITA.

At one point he asked if I realized they had a strategic partnership with Cisco and I said, yes, I was aware of that. I suspect this was to make it clear Clarity hadn't elbowed them out in any way. And he's right. Their products aren't the same.

Later --
