Basis for the telecommunication industry crises follows:

".... After reviewing the accounts and the currently available forecasts, Alcatel anticipates that 1998 will not meet expectations in regards to the Group's operating performance. "

The world must be coming to an end! Even if there is a business downtrend, even if there is a world wide depression, life continues. People somehow at least buy food. In fact, it has been shown that they also buy things like cosmetics and even go to movies, among many other things. Business survive and some even prosper. People continue to use telephones, even in Europe and in the developing countries. The per capita use of cell phones is surprisingly high in Europe, the middle east ... statistically, and as any traveler there can clearly see and confirm.

I, for one, think it is an opportunity to buy more ATI at what will be a bargain in retrospect. When the blood is running in the gutter, buy!

Hi David,

Well, since the focus has shifted to Alcatel as some sort of bellwether for ATI I thought some facts might be in order.

Alcatel warned today, and as a result it fell by about 37% today, dragging the rest of the telecom sector down in its wake. But Alcatel is not comparable to ATI. Alcatel's earnings history has been anything but consistent. In 1992 through 1997 it earned $1.90, 1.60, $1.00 lost money in '95 (around $5 billion -- I don't have the per share number), .65/share, and .98/share respectively.

Alcatel is a diversified company with investments ranging from energy and defence to transportation and telephone equipment.

The point behind this is that the distinctions extend way beyond geography. The two businesses are distinct and apart. The comparison is fatuous.

TTFN,
CTC

Goodness Mr. Wiggins,

Such anger? Is that really necessary? This forum is an exchange of ideas, all with the intention of allowing everyone to become better informed and make better decisions. As I have said, I respect your opinion, why not try acting with some civility and manners and respecting the opinions of others?

I suggest instead of trying to be your typical MD know it all, you go back and learn a bit more about markets and economics. The market is not gentle to rookies such as yourself, a lesson you will learn soon enough, all rookies do. I know I did - back in 1979 - 80.

Heck you don't even know what a real bear market or a recession is do you?

<<<Your baseless innuendo is quite transparent. Not flames, just the facts. Let me explain.. Nothing you say regarding ATI is supported by any facts, i.e. it is baseless.>>>

Actually everything I say about ATI, its product, (luxury, first to be disposed of when money is tight); its new accounts (lots of new pre-paid debit card accounts from people without the credit to get a real cell phone); and economics, (the status of the world economy and its trickle down effect to all countries), are all facts, not "baseless innuendo".

Try limiting your 'know it all' attitude to your work where I'm sure its appreciated and makes you popular. You only look like a pup wet behind the ears in these forums.

<<<I'd be losing money here if I took your advice.>>>

So that you know, my ATI short position, (puts), is up about 20% from my entry point, and my total portfolio is now up over 300% this year. How's your portfolio performing?

Dave I find people that spew anger like you do generally do it out of a deep seated insecurity over their stock position, or just basic deep seated behavioral problem. Regardless of which it is for you, I hope you get some help working it out.

Good luck investing

Steve
