Jeremy,

<This info was provided by my wife who doesn't understand the technology well, but was positive they said CDMA phone in 1999 and in negotiations with Qualcomm.>

These types of contracts are normally put out for bid and several companies will try to win the design. Once a company wins the design, they become a sole source supplier throughout the life cycle of the product. Can you please be more specific about what you mean by "negotiations". Surely Qualcomm hasn't won the design and is simply in price negotiations with Ericsson.

VLSI Technology has an excellent new CDMA product on the market vlsi.com

I don't know if VLSI's CDMA chip competes directly with Qualcomm's or if the two companies supply different components for cellular telephones. I would definitely be interested in any thoughts on this subject. If VLSI and Qualcomm are competing for this design win, I wouldn't count VLSI out. They have a very good working relationship with Ericsson for GSM chips.

Thanks,
Dan
