Matsushita to sell DVD car navigation system

TOKYO -- Matsushita Electric Industrial C. Ltd. said on Friday a subsidiary would launch the world's first digital video disk (DVD) car navigation system that can play video.

The new DVD car navigation system can read MPEG DVD video disks and is compatible with compact disc read-only-memory (CD-ROM) and compact discs (CD), Matsushita said in a statement.

DVD market revving up Down Under

SYDNEY - The fledgling Australian DVD market has ramped up to its second stage with confirmation Thursday that beginning Oct. 2, Warner Home Video will begin distributing with an initial 20-title package and an additional eight to 10 releases per month from now on. Buena Vista Home Entertainment will follow at the end of October with eight titles. And while the format remains firmly entrenched in the sell-through sector for now, distributors said they are increasingly moving more toward day-and-date release with video. One major boost for DVD's rental profile is a decision by major video rental chain Video Ezy to start carrying DVD titles for rental beginning in November. The announcements were made as part of an industry launch of DVD in Sydney backed by most of the major distributors and hardware suppliers
