I agree that the government rarely helps the situation. I'm not so sure about wether anyone is trying to prop up the market. The trading in fact looks quite rational and orderly to me. To be clear I am long term bullish on equities, very bullish. But I am quite aware that the market and sentiment got well ahead of itself. I don't think the global economy is going to collapse and I strongly believe we will muddle are way through. That doesn't meant there won't be pockets that get very bad. And it doesn't mean that the equity markets won't get hit hard. In fact I expect to see equities lose another 1500 to 2000 Dow points. The prospect is making me drool. Sure I am losing money on my current holdings but I don't believe in putting any money in the market that is not going to be there at least 5 years and more likely 10. What this decline will do is provide a great opportunity to find some really excellent companies at bargain prices. I am a long term value investor. Market declines provide great opportunities for this style of investing.
