Johann,

That was a very eloquent post. Your statement "But then I look across this world and see no other place nearly so great as Americas; and my stupid heart becomes inflamed all over again, making me feel a hopeless fool." is reminiscent of the emotions that a person feels when they see a loved one engaging in self-destructive behavior. You react by trying all manner of conversation and interventions to bring the person to their senses, only to watch them persist. You become so disheartened that eventually you throw your hands up in disgust and think "Fine, just leave them to their own devices, I'm no longer involved, I don't want this complicating my life any more." But in doing so an interesting thing begins to happen. You find that by "turning your back" on the person, you begin to either feel guilt or a sense of hardness of heart that continues to cause emotional conflict and consternation within. You're in the proverbial "damned if don't, damned if you do" condition. There are no simple answers to this predicament. I've concluded that the best that anyone can do is to act within the parameters of their own conscience and leave the outcome to Providence. bp

Johannes,I am quite pleased that in some small way I may have helped to convince you to remain a part of the American democratic system. I understand the pain that this particular incident has inflicted upon you .Not because I myself am of like belief but because of the skill in which you communicated this pain .Take hart my friend with your help things will get better.I have always admired those that fought what appeared to be hopeless battles endured overwhelming ridicule from all, only to die long before the fruits of their labor came to bear. This is the way that things often work. Non the less humanity can ill afford to have it's best and brightest drop out.We cannot leave the decision making to the dolts now can we? I would love to discuss this at greater length with you but I am preparing for my semi annual trip back east, perhaps when I get back.
