John, I disagree with the statement Investors should pay attention to individual PC companies, rather than worry about industrywide trends ....

While it is paramount to pay attention to individual companies, when you are invested in a growth stock like Dell it is essential that the overall market expands. This is the inevitable consequence of hypergrowth. AlanH (a Dell bear) quite correctly pointed out that there must be an eventual convergence between the company's growth rate and the industry's growth rate. So the two are inextricably combined.
