09/22/98 - BMW Develops 'LH200' Hydrogen-Burning Car

Germany - German automaker BMW has developed a new concept car
that burns hydrogen in its internal-combustion engine and the firm says
the car could be produced on standard assembly lines "within a few
years," reports the Car Connection. The "L2000" reportedly looks like the
automaker's conventional 7-Series sedans, runs on hydrogen stored at
near-zero temperatures and will have a range of about 240 miles. While
other automakers are using hydrogen to power zero-emission fuel cells,
BMW's approach is to use the cleaner-burning fuel in the same basic
engines that normally run on gasoline. A BMW engineer said the
hydrogen-fueled engines' only emissions are water vapor and extremely
low amounts of nitrogen oxides. The automaker has reportedly been
experimenting with hydrogen-fueled cars since 1978.
