Periphonics Introduces PeriWeb 2.0, an Enhanced Software Environment for Creating Internet Transaction Processing Applications New Version Offers Faster Web Connections, Relay Servers, "Keep-Alive", HTML Dictionaries, and Browser Administration BOHEMIA, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 21, 1998-- Periphonics Corporation (Nasdaq: PERI - news), a leading worldwide provider of products and services for call processing solutions used in Computer Telephony Integration (CTI) and Telecom Enhanced Network Services, has introduced PeriWeb 2.0, a robust software environment for Internet-based transaction processing services that operate on Periphonics' Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems. Although IVR applications use the telephone as the primary input/output device, web browsers can provide an alternate visual interface for many types of applications. Using PeriWeb and PeriProducer(R), Periphonics' graphical application development tool, application specialists can construct full-function transaction processing services that access both client/server and mainframe legacy databases. PeriWeb allows media-independent application development, configuration and execution for transaction processing on both telecommunications and Web networks or for Web only. Since being introduced in 1996, PeriProducer and PeriWeb have enabled application specialists to build applications without the need for C programming or Common Gateway Interface development. In conjunction with Web browsers, PeriWeb provides a visual interface for many types of applications, so they can be accessed by clicking a hypertext link. PeriWeb answers the call and routes it to the application, translating what would otherwise be voice greetings and prompts into dynamic visual hypertext documents to send to the user. User responses can then be entered through the browser via forms or clicks on displayed images. PeriWeb supports both session and stateless execution models. PeriWeb 2.0 provides Web connectivity via a single TCP/IP port, enhancing server security and reducing initial connection overhead. PeriWeb 2.0 is also able to take connections directly from the Web or use MS IIS, Netscape or Apache Web servers as a relay. In this case, the relay server takes a connection from the Web, decrypts it if needed, and passes it to PeriWeb. This feature may be used to support security protocols and post-processing, or future changes in the HTTP protocol. PeriWeb 2.0 supports the ''Keep-Alive'' feature of the HTTP protocol, which allows the reuse of existing connections to browsers. Because establishing a TCP/IP connection is a relatively expensive step, support of the ''Keep-Alive'' feature lowers cost and improves overall system performance. A user of a browser ''calls'' an IVR application by clicking a hypertext link. PeriWeb 2.0 ''answers'' the call and routes it to the application. The application responds with the normal request to send a voice greeting, but PeriWeb translates this into a dynamic hypertext document and sends it to the user. User responses can then be entered through the browser via forms or clicks on displayed images. The new version of PeriWeb uses non-proprietary dictionaries constructed from regular .html and .htm files. The .html files can be built with any text editor or Web publishing tool, such as MS FrontPage or Netscape Composer, as well as with a PeriWeb utility program. Elimination of proprietary dictionary files makes building a Web-enabled application flexible and easy. PeriWeb supports remote publishing of .html files, which helps the developer quickly construct the interface for a Web application. PeriWeb 2.0 also simplifies its own administration by using browser-based forms to set all configuration parameters. A browser can also be used to monitor PeriWeb performance. Periphonics develops, markets and supports products and professional services for Computer Telephony Integration and for Telecom Enhanced Network Services using technologies such as Interactive Voice Response (IVR), speech input, messaging, fax and Web browsers. The Company's products and services automate call and transaction processing, increase call center agent productivity, and often create new revenue streams for our customers. Headquartered in Bohemia, New York (Long Island), Periphonics has systems installed in more than 50 countries.
