Pending government approval, the company expects to manufacture, sell, service and support systems beginning next year. From this location Dell plans to manufacture the company's desktop computer systems for customers in the Mercosul region, which includes Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile. In addition, Dell will use its unique direct-sales model to market a complete line of desktop, notebook, workstation and server systems and offer service and technical support to the Brazilian market. The facility will occupy a 123-acre site in Alvorada, located in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre. Plans for the Brazil operation are to grow to more than 250 local employees over the next two years. "This move places us closer to our customers in a market that presents excellent long-term growth opportunities for Dell," said Kevin Rollins, vice chairman. "The expansion into Brazil is a significant milestone for Dell as we continue our global expansion." According to Daryl Robertson, vice president of Dell Latin America, Dell was attracted to Rio Grande do Sul because of the well-educated local labor force, its excellent location for export to other South American countries and economic incentives designed to attract technology-manufacturing companies to the region.
