Copyright protection is the thing that will stop them. NOVL has their entire NDS technology including the highly valued and very WAN efficient replication concept protected from being stolen by MSFT. The only thing MSFT might try to do is pull a fast one on NOVL and go into this Co-Development agreement whereby MSFT and NOVL share code and technology on Directories.

Eric Schmidt is too smart for that IMO. He knows that NOVL has MSFT on this technology and that when Active Directory comes out, they will fall on their face. Not only that, NOVL has clear stated plans to make revenue from NDS become one of the prime revenue sources. This is to reduce the high percentage of NetWare revenue that NOVL has had in the past. From what I have seen, NOVL has already reduced their dependancy of revenue from NetWare sales to a smaller number. This is because their NDS, GroupWise and BorderManager revenues have increased to take bigger parts of the pie.

With NDS for NT ver.2 being released in November, NDS will run natively on NT boxes (meaning NetWare servers will not not even need to be in the environment). NOVL expects a substantial increase in NDS sales into existing NT shops that need this kind of Directory Service and know that Active Directory is not going to cut it for at least 2+ years.

IBM should take this technology under their belts by buying the company, but there is no rumour of that happening on either side of the fence.
