News article received Saturday, September 19, 1998 8:56:15 AM EST Nortel Seizes Foothold in China's Mobile Telephone Network BEIJING (Sept. 19) XINHUA - The United States-based telecommunications technology company Northern Telecom (Nortel) has taken a foothold in China's expanding mobile communications market by designing and building one of the country's first CDMA network. Nortel built the local mobile communications network in Xi'an in northwestern Shaanxi province with its third-generation IS-95CDMA technology. The equipment has had its receiving and switching power specially enhanced to accommodate local conditions. It supports 13,000 mobile telephone users in Xi'an city and six surrounding prefectures. Nortel built the project jointly with the Great Wall Mobile Communications Company, a subsidiary of local Shaanxi Telecom. This move is part of the all-round-strike strategy hat Nortel adopted after merging Bay Networks earlier this year. Sources from Nortel said this is aimed to reinforce the company's leading position in global CDMA market. Chinese and foreign companies are competing for the lion's share of the mobile telecommunications market in China. China has already developed GSM and ATM mobile communications equipment and put them into mass production. Although the government has decided to use home-made switches in expanding the national backbone mobile communications network, foreign companies, with the advantages of zero tariffs and abundant resources, got an upper hand in selling their equipment to local markets at provincial, city and county levels. Forerunners in China market include Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola and Nortel. China now boasts over 20 million mobile telephone users. The figure is expected to reach 40 million by the end of the century. Enditem 19/09/98 12:17 GMT
