FROM TONITE'S CBS MARKETWATCH.... Compaq was fractionally lower, but CS First Boston analyst Michael
Kwatinetz maintained his "buy" rating on the shares. He said that this pig is
on a pace to meet his third-quarter earnings target of 5 cents a share, driven
by a "lack of channel inventory" and strong seasonal momentum ahead of
the Christmas season. "Q3 and Q4 appear to have been conservatively
guided too," Kwatinetz said, "and we wouldn't be surprised if Q3 in particular
had upside."

Kwatinetz also said Compaq has already begun to realize some "operational
cost savings" from its merger with Digital Equipment, meaning that expenses
will drop 27.2 percent from second-quarter levels.
