Tec signs 5-yr, $100 mln pact with Lucent

FAIRPORT, N.Y., Sept 18 (Reuters) - Local exchange carrier PaeTec Communications Inc. said Friday that it has signed a $100 million, five-year contract with telecommunications equipment giant Lucent Technologies.

The contract is for a minimum of 16 Lucent 5ESS AnyMedia switches. Using Lucent's technology, privately-held PaeTec's national network region will be able to serve 50 percent of the U.S. population that generates over 70 percent of all international traffic, PaeTec said in a statement.

PaeTec also will deploy Lucent's switching control point platform as part of the agreement. The platform will provide advanced local and long-distance services, local number portability, and emerging data and Internet telephony.

Yeah, Alex, I had some private business dealings with a couple of the top sales managers on the west coast for LU, and I was not impressed with the people at all. They came across at good minds, who had been worn down by the system they were in, into complacent bureaucrats! I was with P&G early on, and saw the same thing there. These big, old-line companies just can't turn on a dime.
