Viagra express' influx fears for Ulster
Belfast Telegraph, September 18 1998

By Peter McVerry

THOUSANDS of men from the Republic could
invade Northern Ireland in search of cheap supplies
of Viagra.

And politicians in Dublin have expressed fears that
a different policy on NHS availability in the two
jurisdictions could add to the number crossing the
border to stock up on Viagra.

The Department of Health in Northern Ireland has
confirmed that the anti-impotence drug can be
obtained privately from local GPs who cross-refer
patients not on their NHS lists.

Members of the Dail committee on public accounts
yesterday said they feared a possible 100% cross-
border price difference and different NHS availability
could mean many southern men visiting Northern
Ireland for supplies.

Commitee chairman Jim Mitchell yesterday sought
clarification on the reported price difference,
claiming that the tablet would go on sale at œ9 in
the Republic, but less than half that in Northern
Ireland.

"Remember we had the contraceptive expresses to
Belfast. We might have Viagra expresses to Belfast
if there was not some sort of
co-ordination."Department of Health officials in
Dublin expect about 18,000 men to seek supplies of
the drug.

That figure is based on estimates that 10% of the
180,000 impotency sufferers will opt to try Viagra.

Plans to make Viagra available free to medical card
holders south of the border are being considered by
Health Minister Brian Cowen.

Health officials yesterday told the public accounts
commitee the cost would be "not less than IR œ7m
and perhaps up to IR œ20m."
