<<Maybe there are enough sane Republicans not totally thrilled with the idea of President Newt.>>

There's enough sane Republicans that wish Newt were President! The only way Newt would become President is if Clinton and Gore left office at the same time....died together, impeached together, whatever. I had gotten my Senator to fax me the CRS Report from the Library of Congress for the Presidential and Vice Presidential succession. It does state that the line of succession is President, VP, Speaker of House, President protempore of the Senate, etc. I had hoped that Newt would be in like Flint because Algore has his problems and maybe, with a little luck, we could get him to go too. But that is not the case. I called the Speaker's office and was told that Algore appoints his VP, confirmation by Congress is necessary, and if Algore leaves office, his VP becomes President...remember President Ford? Agnew resigned, Ford was appointed, Nixon resigned...so we'll just have to elect a Republican in 2000 unless Clinton and Gore see the light and commit suicide together!

while visions of Newt's speeches danced in my head
