Pete: What do I think? I think its all been highly visible for about 20 years. However, few wanted to take this thread to its logical conclusion. Too much debt? Not to worry - I'm making a killing flipping condos. Govt. too heavy - Hey that's my job you're talking about! Ethics going down the drain everywhere - hey me first! Pete, you've answered your own questions and, yes, I do not believe we are in a gold age when it would be impossible for new dictators to take the reins promising solutions for the desperate masses. Darned naive to believe it could not happen. Problem is that middle classes won't arise until life gets difficult. They won't rock the boat until it has leaked so much that rocking will capsize the ship. Too many of the intellectuals who are able to foresee the future are dewy-eyed dreamers seeking to establish some sort of utopia. They, of course, have the only answers and they must be in control of everything. So if we do establish a global economy governing council we'll just replace rapacious free marketers with big government dreamers. Was the cold war really a blessing in disguise? The decline of major powers, ex-USA, who kept their clients in check, will likely expose the world to mayhem in the East. Strong men will arise on many levels, benign and malicious, to solve our problems. Eruption of war in east Europe, Middle East and Africa seems imminent, as strong men use current distraction with banking problems to sneak in the back doors to power. Some scary times may be in store for the US middle class. Loss of jobs to low third world wages, loss of retirement security as equity losses hit pensions and private investments. Strong men come to power in sscary times; weak men, like Clinton, in times of plenty. Willie's about to be out. Will a strong man replace him? Quite likely, but where is there a strong man in US culture today when foppish dudes are the present American model? RH
