<<Anyone like their online brokerage?>>

I currently trading through Trading Direct. Some positives, some negatives, but overall pretty satisfied.

The website itself isn't terribly fast, so if you're a day trader then it's probably not for you. Not much in the way of value-added services either (just Zacks and Second Opinion Weekly).

On the other hand, the service is much better than Suretrade. I haven't had occasion to call them, so I can't speak for that. However, their e-mail system is quite prompt.

I've found that if you e-mail them about something, and then ask about a related topic later, that they'll remember the previous interaction.

Response time is quite fast too. If you sound really urgent and uptight, they'll respond within a half hour. If not, then you can still expect an answer same-day.

One day, I had to wire money to my account for a trade I wanted to make that day. The transfer wasn't showing up on my balance sheet, so I e-mailed them. They responded in ten minutes and said they would check on the wire. Within another ten minutes, I had the funds available, and I made the trade.

Trades are $9.95 for stocks at $20 for options (plus per contract charge of $2 or something).

Andrew

Hi Travis.."Anyone like their online brokerage?" Yes. I've been trading with DLJ over a year now and I'm very satisfied with their service. Trades are reasonable and response time is quick (my ISP is AOL). I've had a problem or two in the past, but DLJ remedied them fairly to my *complete satisfaction*. By the way, I have no vested interest in DLJ other than my accounts.

Etrade has been fine by me for a few years now. Actually get to talk to a person when calling support too. Deposits and account filings also seem accurate and timely. Among the top 3 for discount trading.
Just my own eperience.

I've been very happy with E*Trade, at least until they revamped their site recently. How the brain-dead look they have now is supposed to be better than the old one is something I cannot comprehend. It's slower, much harder to navigate, has less features in some areas than the old site, and even shows incorrect data for things like Black-Scholes!

Luckily, they still let you log into the old site if you're a current customer. They call it Classic E*Trade.

I've been extremely pleased with Brown and Company. Very fast response times (even on that horrible Monday a few weeks ago, the phone was answered within 30 seconds), fast trades. Trades are $5 for open orders, $10 for limit orders. Few frills, but competent, cheap, and fast. Same charge for phone or on-line trading. The only negative is that they require that you invest a minimum of $15000.

OT: I like Brown & Co the best and Waterhouse the second best. I keep both.

Brown: Cheapest margin rates of anywhere I know, commissions $10 limit and $5 market both online and off, cheap option rates, fast executions and reports, good (favorable) executions esp on options, efficient, experienced, competent and courteous staff. They're good. Their web site is usually very fast and it's quite well designed. I day trade and prefer the site over my other favorite, Waterhouse, partly because it doesn't log me out. As Jeff indicated, the web site hasn't been overloaded on high volume trading days.

Waterhouse: advantage that marginable stocks start at 4-1/8 rather than 5+, but margin rates are higher and commissions of $12 are much higher if you use voice (by choice rather than web being down), higher option commissions, but also efficient, experienced, competent and courteous staff.

Travis,
we've had excellent results with ScottTrade. Nothing fancy, just the basics -- and it just works. I use their non-graphical site, as it is much faster over my 14.4 modem, but they have another with all the pretty pictures for those that want it.

Main advantage is that they have one of their offices 10 mins down the hiway from us, so service has been excellent for us, but haven't needed much. Have only had to call for internet-related problems, never anything about their trades, which have always been right. Paperwork has been pristine and is in the mail that day, usually here in 2-3. If the local guy doesn't pick up right away, the call bounces to a central number so you can get on with things. Trades are $7, more for limits, etc.

BTW, started out with E-Trade 2 years ago, but quickly found their back office was abyssmal. No way of finding out where you stood for paper transactions. We'd send them a check, and it was days before they knew they had it, and they simply couldn't track it until it showed up like magic on their screens. After 3 episodes, I took my money elsewhere; no way I would go back. SI has an E-Trade thread or two, I believe.
