PMC-Sierra Announces SATURN-Endorsed Packet-Over-SONET/SDH Physical Interface (POS-PHY) Specification

Business Editors/Technology Writers

VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 21, 1998--

New S/UNI-TETRA, Sampling Now, is the Industry's

First Framer to Support the SATURN POS-PHY Level 2

Physical Interface Specification

PMC-Sierra (Nasdaq:PMCS) today introduced the Packet-Over-SONET/SDH (POS-PHY(TM)) Level 2 Physical Interface to enable the inter-operability of Packet-Over-SONET/SDH (POS) solutions. SATURN POS-PHY Level 2 is endorsed by the SATURN(R) POS Sub-Working Group which is comprised of leading manufacturers of packet and ATM equipment. Packet-Over-SONET/SDH optimizes the link bandwidth utilization by enabling routers to connect directly to SONET/SDH rings without requiring an intermediate layer. The SATURN POS-PHY Level 2 Interface is a superset to the Utopia Level 2 specification and allows up to 800 Mbit/s throughput. The specification enables new generations of datacom and Internet Service Provider (ISP) equipment such as super routers for high speed Internet access.

The SATURN POS Sub-Working Group was formed in December, 1997 to accelerate the adoption of POS standards and facilitate equipment inter-operability. In addition to PMC-Sierra, the group consists of major network equipment suppliers including 3COM, Alcatel, Ascend Communications, Cabletron, Cisco Systems, ECI Telecom, FORE Systems, Hughes Network Systems, Lucent Technologies, NEC, Nokia, Nortel, Redstone Communications, Sumitomo Electric and Tellabs. The SATURN POS-PHY Level 2 Interface specification can be requested from PMC-Sierra at POS-PHY@pmc-sierra.com.

PMC-Sierra's new S/UNI-TETRA is the industry's first PHY device to meet the SATURN POS-PHY Level 2 Interface specification. The highly integrated 3.3 volt device is a dual-mode ATM cell processor and POS frame processor enabling high density OC-3c port card designs suitable for multi-service ATM switches and Layer 3 super routers. The S/UNI-TETRA integrates four OC-3c (155 Mbit/s) channels into a simple chip by way of five embedded phase-locked loops on-chip for clock recovery and clock synthesis.

The PM5351 S/UNI-TETRA is characterized for the industrial temperature range operation from -40 to +85 degrees Celsius, and supports all functionality required for WAN SONET/SDH applications. The device is sampling now in a 304 SBGA package and is priced at $249 in one thousand unit quantities.

For ATM-based applications, the S/UNI-TETRA connects directly to the PM7322 RCMP-800 ATM Layer cell processor and the PM73487 QRT / PM73488 QSE switching chip set, over an industry standard Utopia Level II compliant bus (see Figure 1). The device is also software compatible with PMC-Sierra's existing industry standard single, dual and quad channel ATM PHY devices, the PM5346 S/UNI-LITE, PM5347 S/UNI-PLUS, PM5348 S/UNI-DUAL and PM5349 S/UNI-QUAD, preserving software investment.

For POS-based applications, the S/UNI-TETRA provides comprehensive SONET/SDH clock recovery and framing, and includes the X43 + 1 payload scrambling, byte passed HDLC processing and packet FIFO as defined by IETF RFC-1619 and RFC-1662.

"SATURN POS-PHY Level 2 provides a standard interface for connecting physical layer devices to frame-based datalink layer devices," said Tim Pezarro, marketing manager of ATM and SONET/SDH products at PMC-Sierra. "The specification enables new leading edge solutions such as the S/UNI-TETRA, a dual-mode device allowing IP router and switch interfaces to be provisioned as either ATM or Packet-Over-SONET." (see Figure 2)

"The S/UNI-TETRA enables high density OC-3c/STM-1 Packet-Over-SONET solutions," said Hojjat Salemi, Cisco System's GSR-12000 development manager. "Having access to off-the-shelf Packet-Over-SONET PHY chips will provide greater availability of POS solutions from multiple vendors and helps ensure vendor inter-operability at OC-N rates," he added.

PMC-Sierra is a leading provider of high speed internetworking component solutions emphasizing ATM, Ethernet, SONET/SDH, T1/E1 and T3/E3 applications. The company's quality system is registered with the Quality Management Institute to the ISO 9001 standard. As co-founder of the SATURN Development Group, PMC-Sierra works with over 30 other member companies to define and develop interoperable, standard-compliant solutions for high speed networking applications.

Headquartered near Vancouver, British Columbia, PMC-Sierra also offers local technical and sales support in California, Illinois, Ontario, Massachusetts, Texas, Europe and Asia.
