BHP declared force majeure today (28 Sept) on all its contracts for oil and gas products from Bass Strait after the Longford refinery blew up depriving about 4 million Australians in Victoria of any gas for heating, cooking or hot water. Ford and Toyota have stood down about 4600 factory employees and dairy farmers are pouring their milk out on to paddocks because the dairy companies cannot process the milk without gas. Most restaurants are shut, as are bakeries and people staying in 5 star hotels are getting cold showers.
This could cost BHP millions if not billions of dollars. Already the vultures of the legal profession are organising class actions. At the moment it is no gas for the rest of this week but it could be months before full production is resumed.
I am not enjoying my cold showers.
