Visit to Babbages...

My wife dragged me to the mall this afternoon. To my surprise, I spotted a Babbages there and went in to investigate.

Setting: Typical mall in New Jersey. Store located on second level. Small store overloaded with software game titles for both PC and consoles.

3DFX DISPLAY: Located on side wall right at the entrance to the store. A vertical arrangement of five shelves each four feet wide. A large 3DFX sign above the whole display. Banners running across each shelf.

Contents of display: The top two shelves displayed empty boxes of video cards using 3DFX chip sets. A variety of Voodoo2 (8MB, 12MB, and SLI), Voodoo1, and Banshee (Fusion only) boards. The shelves below displayed about 20 games optimized for 3DFX. A large 3DFX sticker was affixed to each game box.

Rest of store: Some of the game boxes not found in the 3DFX display also had identical 3DFX stickers attached. Non-3DFX video cards (TNT) were located to the side of the 3DFX display.

Conversation with salesperson: Fusion board is due Oct. 12. Can leave a $10 deposit to reserve board. No one has placed a deposit at this store yet. Without deposits, the store only expects to get a couple of boards because they are mainly a software store.

MY COMMENTS: The location and design of the display was excellent. Most shoppers in the store would definitely notice it. Most shoppers walking by the store would not notice it. Placing the video cards side-by-side with the software game boxes was also well done and quite attractive. The other video cards were located in an inconvenient spot compared to the 3DFX cards.

Overall, I liked the set-up. Customers will spot their favorite software titles as they enter the store. The uneducated may wonder about this 3DFX optimization. They will look over the video cards priced from $200 to $600. At first they will be discouraged, but then they will spot the Banshee boards for about $150 which also include 2D graphics. Either the store will have it in stock or they will stop off at the local CompUSA and pick it up there.

I'll be calling 3Dfx on Monday or Tuesday. Send me your questions for Ballard or Zacaria. Even if you've heard the answer on MF or in Chip's last two posts, if you need confirmation or clarification, ask away. Since SI does not allow threaded posts, place the phrase "Questions for 3Dfx" as the first line of your post; I may not have the time to read every post in search of questions.

averaged down another 300 shares this morning...

Chip,

Count me in the 'bullish' iron stomach brigade. I've encouraged
people not to sell, so thought it would be appropriate to post
this buy.

Will average down more if the market tanks, or the President
is impeached, or both happen simultaneously. Definitely could
take some time for the market to work things out here.

People can say what they want about 3Dfx management, but they did
a good job of coming right out with this quarter's shortfall before
the OEM announcements. I remember when SIII had similar problems last year and they 'adjusted' the books. That was poor management. Now we can get a nice move back up with the OEM announcements, and with the Creative $99 Banshee retail: wow, that's competitively priced. Sell through for Christmas should be fantastic. At that price, need we
worry about TNT anymore?

Looking ahead I am most worried about 1Q99. What's to keep this
inventory problem not happening again with Banshee as everyone stocks
up now?

lonnnnnnng 3Dfx,

Waldeen
