Federal Reserve puts a Y2K-muzzle on banks

WASHINGTON-The Federal Reserve recently developed a rating system to assess the compliance efforts of banks with regard to Year 2000 readiness - the Fed is emphasizing the "hush, hush" policy banks should use with the results.

"Such compliance ratings cannot be used in any manner to suggest that the Federal Reserve certifies or warrants an organization's readiness for the century date change," the Fed stated in a letter to banks.

The Fed's cautious dealing with the Year 2000 ratings stems from some past blunders.

"In light of some isolated instances of banking organizations improperly disclosing the banking agencies' examination findings and ratings to the public, including in a few cases Year 2000 compliance ratings, it is necessary to re-emphasize the importance of maintaining the confidentiality of examination findings and ratings," stated the Fed.
