Dave, what middle class.. the IMF hasn't cost the US taxpayer a cent. "Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin argues that IMF support has not cost U.S. taxpayers one dime in 50 years, and even earns interest. No budget outlays are involved, the deficit is not increased and revenues are not diverted." seattletimes.com

As you suggest it may damage a middle class of IMF recipients by not letting their financial institutions collapse.
