Also new from Com21 is a suite of headend products that extend Com21's "ComUNITY" product line, including a 10baseT interface module, a return-path multiplexer, a multiport RF switch and an enhanced network-management and provisioning system. Pete Fenner, president and CEO of Com21, said in a prepared statement that the new products "preserve and enhance the key features and architectural benefits of the ComUNITY system," referring to quality-of-service support, multiple-tier pricing classes, private and secure virtual networks and multiple-protocol support. But, he added, the new switch, dubbed the "ComCONTROLLER 2000," does all of that in one-half the rack space, "at a significantly lower price." Harmonic Adds Remux Capability to Headend Amsterdam, Netherlands -- Harmonic Lightwaves Inc. said last week that its "TRANsend" digital-video and high-speed-data system now supports advanced remultiplexing capabilities, so that operators can combine and transmit combinations of video, audio and Internet protocol over their networks. For operators, the advancement means that instead of buying multiple, independent solutions, they can invest in a single platform, Harmonic executives said at the International Broadcasting Convention here. Patrick Harshman, director of digital products for Harmonic, said in a prepared statement that the advancement was made possible by Harmonic's new "IRX 8000" module, which can receive multiple MPEG-2 video streams, individual or multiplexed, from a variety of sources.
