I've read a number of Bennett's works. While I might not lump them in with truly great conservative works, I found them quite articulate and well reasoned. I don't view Bennett as mean spirited. Just because you hold a conviction deeply and defend it passionately does not make you "mean". JLA

I take my conservatism from Aristotle and Edmond Burke. And from H.L. Mencken, Richard Hofstadter, Samuel Huntingdon, William Pfaff.

I am sure you know what you are talking about. But to the typical "street conservative", brought up on a steady diet of Limbaugh, Cal Thomas, William Bennett, Dan Quayle, Oliver North etc. etc., all the above names are those of complete "never heard of 'em" strangers...

This is what I said about Bennett (and the "role-model of the week", Henry "Hypocrite" Hyde) in another thread :

It has now come to light that the other paragon of virtue, Mr. Henry Hyde, was also screwing around. Hardly shocking. If you know how sleazy those characters really are, behind their veneer of respectability. But that one was a case of "youthful indiscretion" at age 41, after getting married and fathering kid/s, wasn't it?! Yeah, right! We have lost "the ability for independent thinking", so we'll fall for that! ;-) And moreover, "he didn't lie under oath, he only lied!". Yeah, we shall fall for that one too!

So, if they are all lechers, we would rather have someone who has respect for human life at least. So that should rule out self-serving hypocrites who think that they have a direct line to God, like that sanctimonious ass, William Bennett. What was his response to the murder of Archbishop Romero and the nuns murdered by members of the Salvadoran National Guard? Nothing, huh? If we broaden the topic of morality beyond the scope of sexuality, it is clear that these pompous asses stand naked!

So, it is not that we consider Clinton is a saint. Clearly, he is not. It is just that the fetid hypocrisy of self-proclaimed keepers of morals that makes some of us feel like throwing up.
