Australia - Women slam rush-through of sex drug The Australian News Network 20sep98 FAST-tracking Viagra's release on to the market has been attacked as sexist by women's medical groups. Doctors have branded the rush-through of the male sex drug Viagra a case of gender bias when abortion pill RU486 remains banned and other women's drugs take years to be approved. Doctors' Reform Society spokeswoman Dr Stefania Siedlecky said the fast-tracking of the anti-impotence drug's release was "an absolute double standard". And NSW Family Planning medical director Dr Terri Foran said the speed with which Viagra went on sale was "almost obscene". It took 10 years for Marvelon, a new contraceptive pill with fewer side-effects than others, to be approved and made available to women. And access to the most advanced IUD, made by Mirena, is still highly restricted. Viagra was released in the US in April and arrived on pharmacy shelves here last week. Meanwhile, doctors and pharmacies were surprised as the launch of one of the most publicised drugs of the decade went off with a whimper last week. A predicted rush of men clamouring for what has been touted as the love drug of the nineties did not happen. Instead, doctors and pharmacists saw a handful of men asking for prescriptions for the controversial drug. Nevertheless, business was "quite brisk" at the Australian Centre for Sexual Health. Dr Cathy Shannon, of the Medical Women's Society, criticised the attitude towards Viagra compared with RU486. "Here is something to increase people's sex lives, we'll fast-track it in six months. But something to do with the after-effects, we won't deal with that, that's a woman's problem - those sluts that have sex with the men," she told the Medical Observer. theaustralian.com.au
