Sep. 18, 1998 (Electronic Engineering Times - CMP via COMTEX) -- Palm
Springs, Calif. - Intel Corp. chose the occasion of its developers'
forum here to trumpet an agreement with RealNetworks Inc. (Seattle) to
incorporate Intel technology that supports automatic scaling of a
streaming video feed into the RealVideo G2 software.
RealNetworks chief executive officer Rob Glazer said the
technology-sharing agreement with Microsoft Corp.-which cost Microsoft
$30 million for the first "snapshot" of the RealNetworks technology and
potentially $35 million more for a second peak over the next 18
months-may not include rights to the Intel Streaming Web video
technology. "The Intel technology I do not believe is included under
the auspices of our agreement with Microsoft," Glazer said.
Intel's Streaming Web technology in part adjusts the bit rate coming
in to the processor. A demonstration at IDF showed a Pentium II
processor handling a 300-kbit/second bit steam and outputting 30
frames/second to the display.
"We will blow right past that in years to come," said Intel senior
vice president Pat Gelsinger. "One day, we will go beyond today's
broadcast-quality video over the Internet."
The bit stream varies with the application, and today's RealSystem
requires users to select a bit-stream rate, depending on their system.
The upcoming beta release of the RealSystem G2 video player will
support automatic scaling and deliver "a 4x superior video steam," Glazer said.
