Stitch, Bernie,

Anwar arrested yesterday, appearing in court today. Charges appear to center on the "sexual deviance" angle. Do you think this will given any credibility among the populace at large, or will people see it as an overt move to silence a potentially significant opposition figure?

I remember asking before how people would react to Anwar's arrest; now we find out. Inevitable step, I suppose, but the drama could play out in many ways. I'm woefully unread on Malaysian history; is there a tradition of peaceful political transition? A precedent for direct public action; street demonstrations and the like? I imagine you're feeling about the way we felt in '83, when the Marcos slide became undeniable.

Good luck,

Steve
