Though it doesn't change the float technically, more institutional ownership (though in July it was nearly 80% already) is bad news for short-sellers in itself.

I don't know when the SEC will rule on the R&D write-off issue. I think it's a non-issue anyway, because it involves non-cash charges. Some will contend that it artificially lifts future earnings, but it doesn't affect operating earnings one way or the other, and that's what the Street watches.
