Clinton should have resigned to spare the nation this pestilential debate. But as we know, the Republicans have expressed their determination not to let him off lightly; their grip on him is persevering and they are inclined to tear the living flesh from his bones. I never liked Clinton. I was in the US when the first Bush-Clinton-Perot debate took place; and before the conclusion of his first sentence, I had the man labeled for a liar. A wooden delivery told me that I wasn't hearing from the real man. After the election came the gays in the army debate, instigated by Clinton, who gambled the valuable Democrat House and Senate majorities on this 'issue'. What could he have been thinking? We now have the answer. He was attempting to prepare the public to accept the avowal if not a display of his own satyriasis. Forget the eminently forgettable President-speak chiming on about children and education and millenarian hope. The political agenda of the step-child from Hot Springs, Arkansas, a jazz-shabby gambling town, was sixties Playboy-style enfranchised sex. Reenter, after the tongue of the Prophetess Monica had done with the head of this Holofernes, the Republicans and their bullet-eyed cohorts of the Christian Coalition. Hardly creatures of sweetness and light, most of them. And they now have their man in their grip. Meanwhile: the Chinese military is discovered to be buying influence with the Democratic party; the Pope addresses a rally in Havana, an event of rare significance eclipsed by the news that the same day began to issue from Washington; fleeing the dogs on his trail, Clinton goes to China, where he kow-tows on trade reciprocity, human rights, massive illegal Asian immigration to the United States, Japan's role in Asia, the independence of Taiwan, India's right to self-defence, the destruction and colonisation of Tibet. The miracle economies of Asia continue their collapse, followed by the news -- but news to whom? -- that thieves and speculators have despoliated Russia entirely, leaving only a post-industrial wasteland dependent on international loans and imported food, while Chinese, the population elements of a civilization 1,500,000,000-strong, continue to move as colonists by the hundreds of thousands into Siberia but also Vancouver, San Francisco, Moscow, Prague, Rome, Paris, Barcelona. Et j'en passe. The footage of Jiang Zemin plashing Christopher Columbus-like in the warm waters of Hawaii was read by his mainland compatriots as the signal that the re-population end-game should begin. Are you ready for the post-Clinton world? For the new millennium? It is coming by a progress very subtle. Forget what the US educational system has already forgotten -- Greece, Rome, London, Paris and Philadelphia -- and history will try Clinton by the book of Confucius. Ave Maria!
