Technology roadmap and delayed purchases.

Even when Intel's competitors narrowed the technology gap, people and the press didn't care, because they were too busy discussing the next Intel cpu due a few months later.

The important thing about Intel's roadmap is that almost all of the steps are small. Katmai instructions are potentially the sole exception, and since they are important to only a small percentage of Intel's customers, they can get away with that. And still I saw people (when I worked retail computer sales) who delayed their purchase of a computer for a month to get the next CPU, or to catch another model at a cheaper price.

When 3Dfx comes out with their next retail product it's probably going to be a big jump from current technologies. Many retail customers would wait for it if they knew about it. Especially since the wait may not be too long, as they are staggering their release of OEM and retail products.
