Dick,
I think Virtual is the cause. Uninstalled it (not just inactivate it) and no more hangs for me so far using base program 9/17 update. Scan and system freezes and reboot symptoms were identical. No other harmful side effects noted yet.

Dick....Exactly the same symptoms here as well...The system hangs after about a third of the way through the scan. Then I have to reboot my computer. What a pain...Oh well...
