One factor that nobody has mentioned in the capacity/demand/profitability discussions is that much excess capacity came about due to intentional violation of basic investment rules. That is, Japan and other Asian chipmakers poured money into capacity simply to gain market share. They saw themselves in an economic war with the West and in effect practiced "investment kamikaze".

The Asians whose lifetime savings are the "dead soldiers" in this war are pissed! If I were Japanese, I think I might be getting kind of tired of the government's lies and secrecy and racial posturing. So perhaps this artificial distortion on the market economy of chipmaking will be much diminished in the future.
