No, I don't think that's it. Clearly, a wounded Clinton for the next two years is preferable for republicans than an incumbent Gore in 2000.

I think a lot of people urging him to resign just want to get the matter over quickly for the good of the nation. My view is that we'd be better served testing perjury as an impeachable offense. Which I believe it is.
