I'm a partisan hater? You're a loon, not to mention an ad hominem artist. That article was a bunch of unsubstantiated Gingrich bashing? There were direct quotes from Republicans, you know. The story said that Newt was trying to preserve the appearance of a "professional, non partisan inquiry". What went on behind closed doors was something else entirely. Newt has a history. The divorce papers in the hospital story is not rumor or innuendo. The Jim Wright story is not rumor or innuendo. Newt's $6 million advance from Rupert Murdoch, for a couple books that didn't exactly hit the best seller lists, is not rumor or innuendo. Yet in your impartial, objective mind Newt is running a professional, non-partisan inquiry. And I'm a partisan hater. As opposed to the "Rush Speaks the TRUTH" crowd around here. That is the pose the speaker has tried to assume all week: the impartial observer waiting for his lawyers on the Judiciary Committee to sort out the facts and set the policy on how to deal with President Clinton's transgressions, while he deals with the people's business. But behind the scenes, according to other Republican lawmakers, not a step is taken or a decision made without the approval of Gingrich, possibly the most partisan and certainly the most dominant speaker in the last generation. "Look, the speaker is the speaker," said the chairman of an important committee who insisted on anonymity. "He calls all the shots. If tapes are going to be released, it's his decision. If hearings are going to be held, he will decide. He consults with us. He listens to us. But he makes the calls." At a closed meeting of House Republicans on Wednesday, Rep. Nancy Johnson of Connecticut expressed concern about the release of sexually explicit portions of the videotape of the president's grand jury testimony. Gingrich -- angry, according to some who were there, or merely firm, according to others -- rose to his feet and declared that the House had already voted to make the material public and that Republicans were not going to back down in the face of complaints from the White House and Democrats in Congress. Gingrich called the president a "misogynist," a person who hates women. Sounds very professional and non partisan to me. Get out the maximum amount of dirt from Ken Starr's "secret" grand jury as quickly as possible. What could be more professional? It's all a blind search for justice. You know, my other responder here, Mr. Knowitall, has at least had the grace to say, at this point anyway, that it's partisan on both sides. You seem to know better. I still have this open question on who's an honest Republican on this issue. If Newt is your answer, ok, but I don't think you'll convince many people with that line. Cheers, Dan.
