Here's a direct quote from Tom Kurlak (Merrill Lynch):
Fundamental Highlights:
o K-6-2 with 3-D selling well now, no longer
order limited.
o Added demand from Hewlett-Packard helping.

This kind of implies that a short time ago, production WAS higher than orders. Hewlett Packard probably eliminated that problem. It wouldn't be that easy to transfer production to IBM or MOT. The first production wafers wouldn't come out for 8-12 weeks (actual number is top secret AMD info, I'm sure), and as AMD's own wafers finished production, you wouldn't know for sure what kind of speed mix and yields IBM or MOT was getting.

There was a cryptic announcement about a "new type of K6" for notebooks. Perhaps AMD decided to ramp the K6-3 initially as notebook chips, which would guarantee high prices for the limited initial production.

Even if the K6-3 is two full speed grades ahead of the Pentium II, AMD would not experience instant demand for 25M CPU's because
1. Some market segments still want Intel. This takes time to change. The consumer market always leads, the big corporations are last to change.
2. AMD couldn't make more than 6M CPU's in a quarter anyway until Dresden comes on line.
3. VIA and ALI would probably not be able to make that many chipsets and the motherboard makers couldn't make that many Super7 motherboards.
