Social Security - this is a purely middle class program that shifts some tax money to
the middle class from the upper class.

Have to argue with you there. It really shifts money to the old from the younger. It DOES NOT shift money from the upper class. For low income people, SS is a much greater burden on them than the income tax. For upper income people, SS cuts out at a certain income level (I think it's now in the 60K plus range?); low and middle income people pay SS on their entire incomes; upper middle and middle class pay SS tax only on a portion of their income. Bill Gates's housekeeper pays a lot higher percentage of her income in SS tax than Bill does.
