Really? What would happen if you had to retire when the market was severely depressed? What if automatic sell programs had kicked in, and all the mutual funds in your 401K had been forced to sell at huge losses to pay people who were redeeming their shares?

It's nice to think that the stock market will always do well, and I would certainly support some mix of stocks in government retirement plans. But there are as many problems as solutions inherent in this idea.
