An interesting article, Rich.

Anyone interested in IBM's version of the story should visit:
chips.ibm.com

Excerpted from "IBM Delivers World's First Copper Chips":
Today's announcement illustrates the advantages IBM's copper technology can bring to
customers. The PowerPC 750 was created as a standard aluminum design operating at up to 300
MHz. By applying IBM's copper manufacturing process to what is essentially the same chip, the
company can now produce semiconductors featuring speeds of at least 400MHz--a 33 percent
performance improvement for the same chip.

Thirty three percent is nothing to sneeze at, and SOI technology should bring further improvements. If the performance is there, then is the Lammers article a smokescreen?

Rich MOT's opening a China plant for handhelds - no AAPL affect

Delaying Virginia plant was planned earlier:

" These closures, however, were part of Motorola's cost-cutting objectives announced earlier this year, as the affected plants produced older technology-based products. ....

... the company is still committed to the Virginia plant, which will produce high-performance chips for sophisticated wireless phones, hand-held computers and state-of-the-art pagers, the slump in the industry forced the postponement of the plant's construction....

Motorola is working on another facility in China, similar to the postponed Virginia plant,..."

Looks like IBM & MOT are going ahead with their copper technology to AAPL's benefit .
