Peter, with the overall market looking to be very weak today, and CIEN coming off something of a strong close on Friday (OK, I'm reaching a little here), any relative strength by CIEN today, could be indicative of a bottom being put in.

Its a little early, but CIEN holding up well in pre-market trading.

Any thoughts.

I guess the question everyone is asking is:
'How low can it go' ...
before someone shows up and pay peanuts to get it ...

From Briefing.com today 9/21/98

BROADCOM CORP. (BRCM) 79 7/8 +4 7/8. After initially moving modestly
higher this morning, shares of developer of integrated circuits are now in full gallop after releasing a new chip that will enable cable modems to provide telephony over a cable network. Initially, while the stock moved up, the reaction was more tamed and reserved, possibly in reaction to the video tapes being played from the Clinton grand jury testimony. The enabling high-speed broadband communications provider has been a hit with investors since it came public in mid-April at $24 a share. And while the stock has retreated in recent weeks in keeping with the general market fall-back, the latest announcement has again perked the interest of investors. According to Broadcom, the new cable modem technology will allow existing coaxial cable networks to deliver data, digital video, telephony and Internet access at speeds up to 56
megabits-per-second, a significant step-up from the current standard 56k voice-band modems. This is a big plus to both Internet users and cable companies as the new modem technology should allow cable operators to create services that are more specific to the user's needs. Investors have certainly taken note of this fact and are again willing to pay a premium for this issue as the new modem technology will certainly have an impact on the ability of cable operators to provide improved features in next-generation cable modems.

-----------------------

If Broadcom successful at its technology, you will see a major leap in network traffic in next few years. ISPs and others will start offering online DVD rental with latest movie release any any time of the day. So instead of driving out to rent/return a tape, or wait for cable company offer the right movie at the right time, I can just click on the website and see the movie I want at the time I want, on my TV, let say Sunday night at 7pm. Websites will start to include video clips for its advertisement, online instruction/education is catching on etc...

What do you think some of the thing I mentioned will do to the Internet backbone ? break it , sure will if no one does any thing about it. Now those companies can say that the choke point is at the modem, not my network. They can't say the same thing one to two years from now. The slowest ISP, cable, and telecommunication companies will be the one on the chopping block.

CIEN does provide a solution to the above problem with its DWDM technology.

If you buy CIEN now at 11, sell Oct10 for 2, you will effectively buy CIEN at 9 by middle of next month.
