Rajala:

RE: According to it, ETSI "endorsed a 3G CDMA standard that bypasses key Qualcomm patents and is incompatible with existing networks that use Qualcomm's CDMA technology".

That's a real unbiased source. I can think of another, how about the American Tobacco Institute making a statement that in their studies the didn't find any conclusive evidence that using tobacco products causes cancer?

The Q says that the ETSI needs their patents. ETSI says they don't. Most likely, the Q will sue each and every company for patent infringement that uses the WCDMA. It also depends where the Q got their patents. If the Q's patents are only in the US, then the Q can only sue the companies that sell their WCDMA equipment in the US.

">>> Personally I think Europe should not bow to the bully tactics of the US, but in practice they might, again. After all we Europeans are a bunch of pinko sissies (we destroyed the continent twice this century before we learned to be that way). So my gut feeling: 30% chance of royalties. But if royalties are to be agreed to they are going to be pretty light. Europe will be listening to the US govt. but not Q since they have no presence or influence here. Its like some individual European company with no market or legal position in the US would be trying to dictate the new US communications standard (after you have stopped laughing at the stupid thought remember that you are probably betting on a similar scheme).<<<"

How about this: Europe wants to go W-CDMA. Q has the patents. Why? Q INVENTED the technology for using CDMA for wireless communications.

If it wasn't for Q there'd BE NO W-CDMA for Europe to move to. Or attempt to STEAL.

But that's Europe for you: a bunch of pinko sissies who attempt to steal the ideas of others and rename them for use behind the high and forbidding tariff-strewn walls of FESTUNG EUROPA; puh- leeze GIVE me a break!

Rajala, from Henry the 8th [I guess there were earlier ones too], Cromwell, William of Orange, maybe Caesar, or even earlier, through British Empire, Karl Marx, Lenin, Hilter and the Nazis, the various Labour Parties, to that grotty little terrorist Francois Mitterand and now the GSM Nazis, Europe has enjoyed a preponderance of autocracy, outright theft, kleptocracy, murder, mayhem and a confiscatory approach to life like so many chimps fighting each other in the jungle for the windfalls of life.

In the human community, there is an understanding that wealth is invented, not taken from other people. Only about half the population in any country has a dim idea of that concept. That excludes Janet Reno and other high officials in the USA.

It remains to be seen whether the value of Qualcomm will be destroyed by these pinko sissies or protected by more enlightened people.

Rajala, I guess you can see SETI is not a popular organisation here! But thanks for pointing that out. Negative items are always of interest - they are the ones which might blindside us [whatever that means - I think it means hitting a Homer from the platter or something].
