Presumably the government set up these retirement accounts to allow working folks an opportunity for long term appreciation without taxes. Because they represent one's retirement assets, you would think that they would contain only the most conservative of investments. However, as usual, the G-boys have missed. These accounts, because of the tax free nature, often become an individuals short term trading vehicle, while the taxable accounts become the growth accounts, since the tax rate is low after a defined period as the investment goes long term. This is exactly the opposite of what was intended.
