DualStar Installs WSNet Single-Wire Solutions to Deliver Cutting Edge Services to New York City High-Rise Residents
September 24, 1998
COLUMBIA, Mo., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ via NewsEdge Corporation -- WSNet Programming & Technology, a Missouri-based provider of satellite television programming and technology solutions for the private cable market, announces the successful launch of fiber-optic-delivered subscriber services in the New York City market through its relationship with DualStar Technologies Corporation (Nasdaq: DSTR) and its "CyberBuilding(TM)" systems. By utilizing WSNet-supplied equipment, DualStar has successfully transformed high-end multiple-dwelling units (MDUs) into state-of-the-art showcases. DualStar's CyberBuilding systems bundle core CyberServices (security, cable television, high-speed Internet access, and telephony) into one, cost-effective and integrated offering.
One of the most notable success stories for DualStar's CyberBuilding system has been the Westbury House on West 86th Street in New York, N.Y. DualStar, a Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC), is the incumbent provider of four bundled services at Westbury House. These services include integrated local, regional and long distance telephone; direct broadcast satellite (DBS) television offering DirecTV; high-speed Internet access as an Internet Service Provider (ISP); and door monitoring via a resident-controlled telephone interface.
The DualStar delivery of DirecTV subscriber services is accomplished through the use of three primary components, the Foxcom SDTV distribution system, the California Amplifier Stacked LNBF, and the California Amplifier Subscriber Unit. Foxcom, an Israeli manufacturer of fiber-optic equipment, produced both the SDTV Optical Transmitter and the SDTV Optical Receivers used in the Westbury installation. The Transmitter converts DBS signals into a fiber-optic signal while the Receiver converts those fiber-optic signals back to standard RF. The Cal-Amp LNBF converts the stacking of right- and left-hand polarities and outputs the signal onto a single cable, which in turn feeds the Foxcom Transmitter. Cal-Amp Subscriber Units allow tenants to run multiple sets in a single dwelling, each outlet receiving its own distinct programming and/or services.
The unique, tangible benefits of DualStar's CyberBuilding system in delivering DirecTV services to the Westbury House are as follows:
-- The system delivers far superior signal quality than conventional
coaxial systems.
-- The system is extremely reliable due to the inherent characteristics of
fiber.
-- The system supports longer cable runs and multiple drops on the same
coaxial cable.
-- The total cost of ownership is less than conventional coaxial systems.
-- A large amount of bandwidth (>2GHz) allows the system operator to
bundle multiple services onto a single wire and thus "future-proof" the
system from obsolescence.
-- Amplifiers, equalizers, and other active components are eliminated,
thereby greatly simplifying the design process.
