Ann - <<first part OT>> my user name comes from the fact that Bullwinkle was already taken, and if you're not old enough to remember the cartoon show, Rocky and Bullwinkle, my venerable namesake had a short bit on the show in which he was introduced as "Mister Knowitall." Back on topic: Your lifetime of observation has perhaps had a far too narrow set of blinders put on it. Generalizations are those things that help to build mindless prejudice and often can be shown to lack intellectual foundations. That's why I tend to challenge those who demonstrate that kind of thinking - it is very revealing, and quite frequently, they wander off into irrellevance, avoiding issues, making even more illogical and eventually rude, demeaning and even hateful accusations of the worst sort. You appear to be much more reasonable than some, and I'd like to address you're last question: ". . .is a reflection on the male culture in the entire nation. " I think it is a reflection of a small sub-culture - one which says, "I can get away with anything because I am (larger, stronger, younger, wealthy, more powerful - pick as many as you like). Where the ego becomes formed around those properties is well beyond my education, but experience tells me that it stems from not having appropriate role models with authority to guide a young man into being a gentleman. It makes itself apparent in things like the wealthy twits who park their $100K cars in the no-parking zone to the knuckle-draggers who can't keep their eyes off of a woman's body in a business meeting. My grandmother, rest her soul, and my mother, would have dragged me away by the ear and briefly, but painfully lectured me for those kinds of behavior. Perhaps that's what is missing. Mr. K.
