Technical Bulletin: Intel Fast Ethernet
Technology Integrated Into Gateway's-Note A New
E-1200 Series

HILLSBORO, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 21, 1998--Intel Corp. (NASDAQ:INTC - news) today announced
the integration of Intel 10/100 Fast Ethernet LAN on Motherboard (LOM) into Gateway's new E-1200 desktop platform, the latest addition to the E-series managed desktop product line.

The E-1200 offers corporate and institution users a full featured desktop machine at the sub-$1,000 entry point.

The E-1200 333 features the Intel(R) Celeron Processor with 128k cache technology. It also includes the latest manageability features, including DMI 2.0, Wired for Management 1.1 and Intel's 82558 Fast Ethernet controller with Alert-on-LAN(Note A) technology.

Intel Fast Ethernet LOM is integrated on the new E-1200 PC, making it easy to get connected to an Ethernet local area network. In addition, integration of the network interface frees up a PCI slot for other peripherals.

Intel's integrated Fast Ethernet solution offers Gateway's customers proven reliability, widespread drivercompatibility and award-winning performance.

''The need for entry-level desktops that meet the increasing management and performance requirements of today's business computing is growing,'' said Greg Lang, business unit manager of Intel's Network Infrastructure Operation. ''Gateway's E-1200, with integrated Intel Fast Ethernet LOM, offers a full featured solution at a value
price point.''

Intel's 10/100 Fast Ethernet products are based on its breakthrough single-chip solution, the Intel 82558 controller. The 82558 is the foundation of Intel's network adapter line, including the Intel PRO/100+ Management Adapter and the award-winning Intel PRO/100+ Server Adapter line. The 82558 is Intel's most successful LAN
on motherboard solution to date, combining optimized performance using Adaptive Technology and Wired for Management (WfM) capabilities on a single, highly integrated chip that yields cost-effective, easy designs for PC manufacturers.

The world's 10 leading PC manufacturers offer Intel-based Fast Ethernet technology within their product line. Further information on Intel's networking products is available at www.intel.com/network or 800-538-3373 in North America.

Paul, what I've been stumping/thumping about for a while now:

>>>Scumbria - You Need to Rethink Your Intel/Windows NT position for
Workstations.

Intel and Microsoft just scored a MAJOR DESIGN WIN with Chrysler for use of
Xeon Workstations and Windows NT.<<<

Of course, Scumbria will say it's only CAD, not CAE. Or, it's only cars. Well, CAD is also used as a design tool for bridges, skyscrapers and rocket engines. If Chrysler feels NT stations are powerful, stable, secure and RAS enough, vis a vis UNIX servers, I think we'll see a lot of other serious users going the same way.

You Need to Rethink Your Intel/Windows NT position for Workstations.

Paul,

I'm not familiar with the tool flow used in the automotive industry. Perhaps NT is adequate for Chrysler's needs. Only time will tell if they can be productive and start building cars worth buying.

I am very familiar with microprocessor and 3D-graphics design flow. It would be very inefficient to attempt to design a modern microprocessor in an NT environment. Probably suicidal.
