yes - you are allowed to take the fifth. That is why the whole grand jury system is flawed. You are forced to testify or take the 5th w/o ever being charged with any crime. Of course if you take the 5th then you are assumed to be guilty of a crime.

BTW grand jury proceedings are supposed to be SECRET and not released to the public.

OTOH if you were charged with a crime, you dont need to testify and dont need to take the 5th.

Of course taking a 5th of scotch is ok.
